Figures - meaning accurate skating around drawn circles - is something that ice skaters claim to do when really they are doing dance or freeskating. Roller skaters really do it, and they are better skaters for it! (Don't waste your breath / e-mail traffic arguing against this one!)
The "knack" of figure skating is to skate well around the circles - keeping exactly to the tracing is a good idea, but not at the expense of "skating quality".
